New York City
At Zafra Auto School, we've been guiding New Yorkers behind the wheel with patience, precision, and a curriculum built for the realities of city driving. From your first turn to your final road test — we're with you.
Our Programs
Whether you're a complete beginner or refreshing skills after years on the road, Zafra Auto School offers a structured path to confidence and licensure.
The complete foundation for first-time drivers. Covers vehicle controls, road signs, basic maneuvers, and the New York State road test — all in a structured curriculum designed for absolute beginners.
For licensed drivers who want to sharpen their skills, reduce insurance premiums, or rebuild confidence after a break from the road. Learn to anticipate hazards before they appear.
Master the unique challenges of Manhattan and borough driving — parallel parking on narrow streets, navigating bus lanes, reading complex intersections, and handling the pace of NYC traffic with composure.
One-on-one instruction on your schedule. Ideal for students who need personalized attention, have specific goals, or prefer the flexibility of arranging lessons around work or school.
Serving the Morningside Heights community and all five boroughs
About Zafra Auto School
Zafra Auto School was founded with a simple belief: every New Yorker deserves to drive with confidence — not just pass a test, but genuinely feel prepared for the roads they'll face every day.
Our instructors are certified New York State driving teachers with deep knowledge of local roads, DMV requirements, and the unique challenges that make NYC driving different from anywhere else. We don't rush our students. We meet them where they are and build from there.
Based at 501 W 145th Street in Morningside Heights, we've spent over a decade helping students from Harlem, Upper Manhattan, the Bronx, and beyond earn their licenses and gain the independence that comes with it.
How It Works
From your first phone call to the moment you receive your license, Zafra Auto School guides you through every step.
Reach out at (212) 690-2000 or stop by our office at 501 W 145th Street. We'll assess your experience level, discuss your goals, and recommend the right program.
Attend our DMV-approved pre-licensing course, either in person or online. You'll learn road rules, safety techniques, and what to expect on the road test.
Get hands-on training with a certified instructor in a dual-control vehicle. You'll practice in real NYC conditions — from quiet residential streets to busy avenues.
We'll help you schedule your DMV road test and provide targeted prep to ensure you're ready. Then it's your turn to show what you've learned — and drive away with your license.
Student Stories
I was terrified of driving in the city. The instructors at Zafra were patient and calm — they never made me feel rushed. By the end of my lessons, I actually felt ready for the road test. I passed on my first try and couldn't be more grateful.
As someone who hadn't driven in over ten years, I needed to rebuild my confidence from scratch. Zafra's private lessons were exactly what I needed — one-on-one time with an instructor who understood my anxiety and helped me overcome it.
My daughter needed her pre-licensing course and defensive driving class. Zafra handled everything — scheduling, paperwork, and actual instruction. They made the whole process smooth and stress-free. Highly recommend to any parent.
